New travel comfort in our Austrian Airlines Premium Economy Class

The aim of this ambitious project was to create a new travel class between Business Class and Economy Class. The starting signal was given in October 2016 under the project management of Carsten Wortmann. Almost all departments in the company were involved. However, teams from the areas of product management, branding, technology, marketing, revenue management, sales, network planning, ground operations and eCommerce were particularly involved.

"This can't be so complicated, was the general tenor in the beginning", says Carsten Wortmann. But the opposite soon turned out to be reality - a seat is not just a seat and the goal is ambitious: To convert the entire long-haul fleet without impeding the current flight program. The primary goal was to transfer the new travel experience from the project team's heads to the aircraft and to finally inspire our passengers with it. A tight schedule had to be adhered, as the aircraft were converted during the scheduled maintenance dates.

The special Premium Economy seats were produced by a German manufacturer. During the winter of 2017/2018, all aircraft in the long-haul fleet - five Boeing 777s and six Boeing 767s - were converted and refitted in Hong Kong, Taipei and Beijing.

The first Premium Economy seats could already be booked at the official sales launch in September 2017. Before all aircraft were converted, a small upgrade made it possible to travel in Premium Economy a few months ago - but without service.

252 Austrian Airlines Premium Economy Class Seats

After the successful conversion and perfect timing according to schedule, the first flights in Premium Economy Class including special service took off in March 2018.

A total of 252 Premium Economy Class seats now fly on board of eleven aircraft at regular intervals between Austria, the US, Thailand, South Africa and many other destinations.
