The most beautiful Christmas markets in Austria

Marching from one market stall to another, rummaging, trying out Christmas delicacies, admiring craftwork, shopping for Christmas tree decorations and gifts. Enjoying roasted almonds, chestnuts or gingerbread, visiting petting zoos, drinking mulled wine! What could be better than visiting one of the many beautiful and romantic Christmas markets with family or friends in the run-up to Christmas? And when it starts to snow, it's just beautiful! Below you can read our Christkindl and Christmas market favourites in Austria.

The most beautiful Christmas markets in Salzburg

The oldest, largest and most famous Christmas market is located in the middle of Salzburg's old town. For 525 years now, the baroque backdrop of Salzburg Cathedral and the Residenz has served as the atmospheric pre-Christmas setting. Visitors can explore and enjoy various market stalls with arts and crafts, culinary delights, punch and mulled wine. Right across the Mozartplatz is the Salzburg ice rink. You can also rent skates here for just a few euros. Then nothing can prevent a (wobbly) round for a glass of punch and pre-Christmas pop music with a view of the Hohensalzburg Fortress.

However, the pre-Christmas market experience at the gates of the Mozart city is really romantic, atmospheric and beautiful. True to the motto "Nothing could be more beautiful", the Hellbrunn Advent magic takes place around the magnificent palace of the archbishops in Hellbrunn Palace. In addition to the obligatory mulled wine and punch stalls, there are also all kinds of traditional and handmade items. After a tour through the park of the famous water games, where you can bake cookies, roast sausages and stroke animals, it is worthwhile to take an extended stroll through the extensive Hellbrunn park.

The most beautiful Christmas markets in Innsbruck

The Christmas markets in Tyrol's capital city score points above all with the mountains as a dream backdrop, atmospheric lighting, festive music and great ambience. In the pre-Christmas period Innsbruck is proclaimed a Christmas market zone. As part of Innsbruck's Bergweihnacht, a total of six Christmas markets with more than 200 market stalls impress visitors with a variety of attractions. The Christmas market in the Old Town in front of the Golden Roof with its huge illuminated Christmas tree is particularly beautiful. Every day at half past five, festive music can be heard from the balconies of the city's landmark - the Golden Roof. You can buy craftwork and Christmas tree decorations at the more than 70 market stalls, and in the "Fairy Tale and Giant Alley" legendary figures carry visitors off into another world.

A few alleys further, at the Christmas market in Maria-Theresienstraße, light installations and products from all over the world are particularly impressive. If you want to reach for the sky, you should definitely visit Innsbruck's highest Christmas market, the Christmas market at the Hungerburg. From up here you have a fantastic view of the glittering city and the surrounding mountains, which may even glisten white. Even the ride with the stations designed by star architect Zaha Hadid is an experience in a class of its own.

The most beautiful Christmas markets in Vienna

Bigger, more imposing, more impressive! Just like the federal capital itself, the Christmas markets in the Austrian capital are characterised by impressive beauty and atmosphere. The Christmas market in front of the Vienna City Hall is a real sea of lights - our personal highlight. The approximately 150 market stalls offer Christmas presents, Christmas tree decorations, arts and crafts, culinary delicacies, sweets and warming drinks. Visitors can also glide along romantic paths through the Christmas-lit park at the "Little Ice Dream".

There is also an ice-skating rental service on site. The "Kinderwelt" offers a carousel, a reindeer train and beautiful light installations in the park, which focus on Christmas stories for children. So there is nothing left to be desired.

The Art Advent on Karlsplatz in front of the impressive columned portal of the baroque Karlskirche offers plenty for art lovers. Here - in addition to the petting zoo and bio catering - the focus lies on authentic arts and crafts, which are also demonstrated in an exhibition workshop. Watch how glass is blown, candles are made, glass beads are twisted or leather is made into book covers!

The most beautiful Christmas markets in Graz

The old town of Graz is a continuous "Christkindlmarkt zone" in the pre-Christmas period. Nowhere else in Austria can you find 14 Christmas markets within easy walking distance. So the choice is really hard! At the main square in Graz there is a whole Christmas village with delicious food, mulled wine and craftwork. In the evening, when it gets dark, the town hall glows with artistic light installations as an oversized Advent calendar. Another Advent highlight of Graz is the "Eiskrippe" in the Landhaushof.

The design huts at the Mehlplatz provide a welcome distraction. Art plays a major role and above all, great importance is attached to new interpretations of traditional craftwork. In the evening the stylish huts turn the Mehlplatz into a glowing crystal field.
