As cooler temperatures and non-stop drizzle become the norm for the months ahead at home, it’s time to pack your bags! So jump aboard and fly with us to the very sunniest spots, as we show you some amazingly autumnal travel destinations.
#1 SURFING ON FUERTEVENTURA
Love your water sports? Then listen up! Autumn is the best time to take a surfing course on Fuerteventura. No matter whether you’re a beginner or a more advanced surfer, you’ll find everything you need (and more) to have fun in the water on the Canary Island. If you’re looking for more intense courses, go for a surf camp: you’ll be standing upright on the board and riding the waves in no time!

#2 HIKING ON TENERIFE
Even if you only do so once in your life – you have to climb the Teide! Spain’s highest mountain is not located on the European mainland at all, in fact; it’s a good 1,500 kilometres away, in the Canary Islands. The best time to schedule in your activity holiday on Tenerife is autumn, when the temperatures are at their most pleasant and the sea’s still warm enough to go for a swim.
Like the idea of a bit more Tenerife? Be absolutely sure to explore the north of the island!
Want to explore the hiking trails on Tenerife? Austrian Airlines flies directly to Tenerife once a week!
#3 DIVING ON FUNCHAL
While many visitors prefer springtime to visit Madeira, autumn is also an excellent time to discover the ‘island of flowers’. It’s considerably quieter at this time of year, and hotel prices are very affordable. The pleasant temperatures during this season are excellently suited not just for hiking or cycling tours, but also to getting acquainted with the underwater world around Madeira. The view is very clear in autumn, and the sea agreeably warm.
Going diving? With Austrian Airlines, you can fly to the Funchal once a week!
#4 TRAVELLING TO CYPRUS WITH THE FAMILY
As the third-largest island in the Mediterranean, Cyprus has something to offer for all tastes and ages: go swimming in the Mediterranean one last time before the cold months really arrive – the water temperatures are often actually at their highest in the autumn! Spend a great afternoon with your children at the Golden Donkeys Farm in Skarinou. Take an excursion around the island, and visit the medieval amusement park Cyprus Land in Limassol. Try out some paintball and climbing at the Adventure Mountain Park in Kyperounta, or explore some of the countless hiking paths on the island.
Want to go to Cyprus? With Austrian Airlines, you can fly comfortably to Larnaca twice a week!
#5 TAKING A ROUND-TRIP THROUGH CHINA
Impressive buildings, devout temples, enchanting nature and lively metropolises – China is always worth a visit. Immerse yourself in Chinese culture, and feel as if you’ve been transported back to another era, when Emperors still held sway over the country. It’s decidedly quieter at this time of year than in the super-busy summer months – ideal, therefore, for a round-trip through China. Walk along the Great Wall at Mutianyu, and let yourself be enchanted by the autumnal colours of the surrounding forests. Take a journey by train across the country, admire the soldiers of the Terracotta Army at Xi’an, or explore the south, with its own, very different temperament from the rest of China.
Do you actually prefer the cooler temperatures in autumn, and want to try out the autumnal mood? If so, then these two destinations will be absolutely perfect for you:
#6 GOING ON A CASTLE AND PALACE HUNT IN TRANSYLVANIA
Autumn – when the mist is hanging in the surrounding hilly landscapes and the forests are clad in a vast array of different autumnal reds and greens – is a superb time to take a stroll through Romania’s castles and palaces. In Transylvania, you can even look around what is said to be Count Dracula’s castle, in Törzburg (Bran), which Irish author Bram Stoker used as the original model for his timeless novel. And don’t forget to visit Peles Castle, in Sinaia, or Castle Hunedoara while you’re in the area.
Like the idea of more castles and history? Austrian Airlines flies daily to the Romanian capital Bucharest.
#7 FOLLOWING IN HARRY POTTER’S PATH IN AND AROUND LONDON
Witches, magicians and muggles – listen up! This autumn, go to England and let yourself be carried off into the magical world of Harry Potter by visiting famous shooting locations from the films. At the heart of London, at King’s Cross Station (Platform 9 ¾, natch), you can travel to Hogwarts; you can also try to speak to snakes at the reptile house in London Zoo, defy Death Eaters on the Millennium Bridge and much more. One thing you should be sure not to miss out on is the House of MinaLima. The graphic designers Miraphora Mina and Eduardo Lima were primarily responsible for the ‘graphic universe’ of Harry Potter, and at the House of MinaLima, you can observe their masterpieces over several floors, even taking them home with you as souvenirs – wallpaper, for example – if you like. And if even that isn’t enough magic for you, then check out the Warner Bros Studio Tour: The Making Of Harry Potter, some way outside London.
Off you go to England! With Austrian Airlines, you can fly directly from Vienna to London Heathrow several times a day.
